Disha
TL;DR: The Hyderabad Encounter does not solve the problem.
1. According to common man’s perspective, justice has been delivered to Disha. Those who do not behave like humans do not deserve any human-like behavior. People, wanted instant justice which has been delivered by Cyberabad Police.
But, IMO, Police can only nab the culprits. They can't deliver justice by executing extra-judicial killings. Mob-justice can never be the solution. Personally, I didn't feel good when I heard in the morning that the four were killed in an encounter. Would this mob justice stop future crimes?
2. Everyone is hailing the police chief as a hero now. But, had the Police been so much concerned about delivering justice, why they claimed that the girl must have eloped with someone and refused to file the complaint citing “area out of jurisdiction” when her sister approached them within half an hour of her last call. The place is less than 10 minutes from the station, though.
All they have managed now is to get rid of the criticism they have been facing because they did not do their duty sincerely. Who fixes their responsibility? And What if there were more people? What if the real culprits were still roaming freely? What if some of them were innocent?
3. The problem with this encounter is that this incident would set a wrong precedent and encourage lynchings. Here, all four had confessed committing the crime. But there might be incidences where allegations are false or some of the accused are innocent. Then, also they would have to face mob justice. Real culprits would still roam around freely after that.
Consider the Rohtak Sisters’ case. They have ruined so many lives by false allegations and nothing happened to them. Then, there is Ryan International’s case in Gurgaon. Initially, the police arrested the driver. Later, came out the actual truth when CBI concluded that a class XI student had killed the class II student.
Our institutions and we as a society have failed but we can't justify mobocracy. Because, after an extent only innocent would face the wrath of the mob or those from the poor strata of the society. What we need is proper investigation and rapid justice delivery and making sure that guilty are behind the bars, no matter what their status is.
4. People ask for tougher laws and even, Martial Laws. But, even then, they have to follow due process. Enough laws have been made- fast track courts, Nirbhaya funds and what not. But has anything changed since 2012?
Need of the hour is strengthening the justice delivery system so that any criminal irrespective of status should fear the law. (But, this is not happening anytime soon considering the fact that major part of the problem is Criminalization of Politics and Politicization of Criminals.)
5. Proper parenting is what ultimately leads to the solution. Address misogyny and patriarchy. If you objectify women, these things would never stop. If you support Kabir Singh, housefull 4, kambakht Ishq type of movies, you are part of the problem. We need Feminism (and it stands for equality, Sir/Madam!)
6. But, how do you expect people fighting hunger, diseases to focus on all of this? How do you make them aware?
Tackle the development related issues, i.e, education, poverty, employment, and most importantly, income inequality. (There is a scene in the Netflix show Delhi Crime, where the cop explains the mindset of these criminals. In fact, the whole show is a must-watch.)
7. Also, if you keep electing those criminals as your legislators, you are part of the problem. People like, Chinmayanand, Sengar have been living happily. Nithyananand bought an island and declared it his own nation, even said that no one can touch him. Would this mob deliver justice to their victims too? Have we forgotten how the same Indians ran riot, killing at least 30, when Gurmeet Ram Rahim was held guilty of rape?
8. Lastly, the foundation of all of this is instilling moral values. Rarely, people have ethics today, irrespective of income and education levels. And, they don't even realize this.
For example, we love songs objectifying women, promoting eve teasing or violence against women. But on social media or in everyday conversations, no one is more ethical than us. (Oh, you hypocrite Akshay Kumar, Sandeep Reddy Vanga type of people!)
The bottom line is we are failing as a society everywhere and every one of us will face the consequences. Problem lies with us and we need to be the part of the solution. We need to introspect and address the root cause. We need to take pro active steps and stop crimes altogether, instead of compensating the victims.
P.S. Please, don’t curtail the freedom of women in your families. Don’t ask them to stay indoors, if they don’t want to. Instead, teach them self-defence. Enroll your kids into Martial Arts classes. Focus on proper parenting. Also, we need more women on the roads, not inside the cages, to make this country a safer place. Going out is normal, rapes are not!
